The Good Life in Playa del Carmen

Living in Playa del Carmen is a bit like living in paradise. Think you can handle it? Then read on to find out more about the area.

Midway between the popular resort town of Cancun and the mellow charms of bohemian Tulum lies Playa del Carmen, better known as paradise. Not only does Playa del Carmen offer the bluest of waters and softest of sand, but also an international vibe thanks to the thousands of American, Canadian, and European expats who call the city home.

Why do so many people choose to uproot their life and plant themselves in Playa del Carmen? The near-perfect weather is a big draw for many people who have lived in colder climates.

The city also offers the best of both worlds. If you choose, you can live a very casual and laidback lifestyle where time seems to slow down. Here you can spend your days strolling along the beach, dipping your toes in the warm water and watching gulls circle overhead.

On the other hand, Playa del Carmen is also a trendy and sophisticated city, replete with upscale shopping and dining destinations. If you like the idea of charging up your credit card during an afternoon shopping spree, then catching lunch at a world-class seafood restaurant focusing on locally-sourced items, you’ll love living in Playa del Carmen.

Playa del Carmen is located in the area of Mexico known as Riviera Maya. Since the 1970s, the Mexican government has heavily invested in this coastal region, building it up to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The feel here is First World, with services, infrastructure, and amenities to match. Since there is such a large expat community, close to 200,000 now, people from American, Canada and Europe have an easy time adjusting to life in Playa del Carmen. The area feels familiar, with big chain stores like Starbucks, the Home Depot, and Sam’s Club on the outskirts of town. There are also gourmet food stores, art galleries and clothing boutiques within the city.

Service and amenities like high-speed Internet, good cellphone coverage, fine healthcare, good roads and reliable electricity make it easy to feel safe and comfortable here. Plus, the international airport in Cancun is only about an hour away, so it’s easy to get back and forth from your home country and receive guests.
